• Understanding Motor Neurone Disease Types: ALS, PMA, PLS & PBP

Motor neurone disease (MND) refers to a group of progressive neurological disorders that damage motor neurons, the nerve cells that carry signals between the brain and the body. It leads to muscle weakness. The most common form of motor neurone disease types is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which affects both upper and lower motor neurons, leading to weakness in limbs and difficulties in speech, breathing, and swallowing. Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) involves only lower motor neurons, causing gradual muscle deterioration, particularly in the arms and hands. Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) affects upper motor neurons, resulting in stiffness and spasticity in the legs. Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP) targets neurons in the brainstem, thus causing difficulty in speech and swallowing. These conditions vary in symptoms and progression, but all affect movement and might result in speech and language disorder in MND.
